The community consists of people. People that meet and do great things. Supporting the community we developed Hypha, a CMS that support developing community websites.
During the presentation Tammo will tell about the people and the process behind Hypha. Also about what this Open Source CMS can do for other groups.

Brainstorm on how we can make a LoRa Bat Detector. Together we search the net and figure out what sensors to use, how and where to analyse the data in order to make it suitable for LoRa.
We make a plan to build one and how to continue from there.

There are mountains of useful data available from government that you can use for your own projects. Concerning maps, environment, mobility, spending, energy usage, and many other things. Open data can be a source of agency for citizens, organisations, companies, and even other government branches. For citizen science projects they may provide context for your own measurement for instance.
We'll discuss what open data is, what is available, and how you might use open data. And we'll explore with participants what data might be of interest to you, and if /from where such data might be available, or if not, how to request it.
Sunday January 27
15:30-16:15, spullenlab
Lacuna Space will launch satellites to receive data from IoT sensors in remote areas all around the world. The interface will be open-source, such that people can build their own devices to connect to the satellite service. This could enable citizen science projects in places where this has not been viable before. We will talk about our journey to get there, and brainstorm on the use-cases this might make feasible.

Spontaneous sensor experiments are facilitated by generic tools but hindered by too much of a preconceived format. However, too much variety in all kinds of measurements stands in the way of exchanging and aggregating data in a meaningful way. We propose a protocol to make the ends of small scale experimenting and large scale data analysis meet.

There will be several activities for children, both on Saturday and on Sunday. So you can just bring them along!
Professor Jeroen van der Sluijs is an expert on pollinator decline and the dangers of neonicotinide pesticides. He gives an overview of the complex problems and where he sees chances for citizen scientists to contribute to the solution of this very urgent problem.

In the Meet je Stad project, measurements are being made throughout the city, of a.o temperature and relative humidity.
Every day a total of between 80 and 140 sensors are active.
Measuring is just the beginning, the importance is in what we measure.
The Meet je Stad measurements allow us to research the climate in the city of Amersfoort.
In this presentation we show an analysis of the data of the record hottest night of this summer, and the problems you run into when you try to filter the data for outliers.
Sunday January 27
16:15-17:00, spullenlab
With LORA infrastructures, such as the one of 'meet je stad' we can start measuring all kinds of things about our environment. In this brainstorm I would like to know what things you would like to measure about water? What would you like to know about your local ditch, lake, moat, river, sea, garden pond, you name it. What is already out there in terms of low-costs sensors and what is still missing? Can we design good-enough sensors ourselves?

Measuring water temperatures, air temperatures, solar radiation and other meteorological data in cities help to understand the urban climate and the urban heat island effect. In this presentation, I will present four measurement experiments carried out in Amsterdam, which give answers to the following questions: What are the thermal conditions during extreme warm days in the city of Amsterdam? Which urban areas are coolest? How large is the urban heat island effect during day and night? How hot can bedrooms become during a heat wave if you keep your window closed? Does urban water cool the urban environment?

Citizens in Leidschendam Voorburg joined a Citizen Science initiative of the Provincie Zuid Holland and have been measuring NO2 and PM10 pollution since May 2018. Analysis methods have been developed. Preliminary results are interesting, but also lead to questions on the techniques employed.

Citizen Science projects tend to produce a lot of data.
Storing measurements can be quite a challenge if you want to be able to analyze and query your data in a quick and easy way.
The measurement initiative in Zeist (SMAL Zeist) also faced this challenge and wants to demonstrate their design choices, and how that enabled them to produce (real-time) charts, maps and dashboards.

A Citizen Science project, SMAL-Zeist, is trying to make sense of the sensor data collected during New Year's Eve 2018 - 2019. Municipalities in the Netherlands are struggling with policies to limit the public tradition of lighting large quantities of fireworks, and have to navigate between safety issues, nuisance and patronage.

A small groups of citizens have been declared crazy in 2015 by their aim to cover the South-German city Stuttgart with 300 DIY air quality sensors. This project has reached now an installation base of over 6000 sensors in over 50 countries worldwide.

Modern day beehives differ substantially from tree cavities, the habitat that the bees naturally evolved in. This has a large impact on the micro-climate inside the hive, which is important for the bees well-being and impacts the winter survival rates. I am therefore investigating different types of top covers to improve the effects on the inner micro-climate and correlate the results to weather data collected via the Meet je Stad network. The presentation will give a brief overview of urban beekeeping, the performed measurements and the potential use of the Meet je Stad LoRa-network to further improve modern hives.

In this kickoff brainstorm we want to share our plans with you and use your brainpower to get the project a step closer to realisation.

36 Citizens in the city of Nijmegen who live in an old monastery build themselves a community green water infiltration and rainwater harvesting system that is disconnected from the sewage system. The amount of rain falling in heavy downpours, will continue to increase. Rainwater flows now into a tank and when the tank is full the water flows into the ground via infiltration crates. A measuring system to measure (heavy)rainfall, infiltration speed, water use and water quality is under development. All data is open source and will be used in an app. Help in this stage is appreciated.

Meet je Stad started as a group that measures climate locally. Now, air quality has ben added to the project.
In this lecture/brainstorm Matthijs Kooijman and Harmen Zijp walk you through the new PCB and are eager to hear your comment and ideas.

The meet-je-stad devices measure temperature, but sometimes literature talks about different types of temperature. What is the difference between the pysical temperature and the radiant temperature? Both measure temperature, but which is the real one? This is a quest for the true nature of temperature and how to measure it. The difference between heat and temperature is explained and at least 3 ways of measuring temperature are being explained. This is done in a vivid way with demonstrations to clarify the concepts.

Bats. Nocturnal animals, mysterious creatures, a bit eerie to most but very useful for all.
They swiftly fly around the light post, sometimes even approaching you to check you out.
You can sometimes see them at dusk, but when darkness hits they are gone.
At least… for the naked eye. But what about our ears?!
I`d like to share what I know about bats, their behaviours and most of all how they use ultrasonic sound to navigate.
