Line-up for Koppelting 2017

lecture: Paul Bessems - Blockchain Organizing

Paul Bessems is Blockchain Consultant. He recently wrote a 600+ page book, together with Walter Bril, about Blockchain Organizing. It is written in Dutch and will be translated into English at the end of 2017/beginning of 2018.

In the context of the twenty-first century we need new organization models to organize the work of service, information and knowledge workers in order to improve their productivity and their contribution to a more sustainable prosperity. Blockchain Organizing is one of the most promising organization concepts to support this idea.

lecture: Harmen Zijp - Citizen Investigative Journalism

Traditional media are under pressure to generate profit and cut expensive research. The new 'social' media don't even bother to scrutinize. As a result a vital check to the balance of power in our democracies is waning. At Koppelting it is people to the rescue! Harmen Zijp developed a set of tools empowering citizens who want to mine gouvernment documents and other public resources to collectively assess what's going on behind the scenes.

You can bring the class to the fablab, but why not bring the lab to the class? Greater reach, but you need it mobile. In a car, in a van?
Bart built a full functional fablab (including a lasercutter), that can be taken to a school behind a bike.
It is an add-on to the new IKEA SLADDA bike trailer (€169). It will pass through any door wide 78 cms or more.
But inside deploys into an almost 2 meters long makerspace.
He will bike it from Utrecht to Amersfoort (if the weather permits)

lecture: Maranke Spoor - Introduction to permaculture

Lecture with Q&A.
Permaculture is a interdisciplinairy design science based in ethics. Its about being part of the solution instead of part of the problem. We can e.g. grow food while increasing biodiversity. This can be the future of our food. Maranke teaches permaculture helped translate/edit Mark Shepards restoration agriculture voor NL/BE, his farm is a great example of this within a temperate climate.
Permaculture principles can be applied at any scale. The goal of permaculture is: meeting human needs while increasing ecosystem health. Permaculture uses ethical principles and design priciples to achieve this.
Sunday August 27

workshop: Arjan Klaver & Harmen Zijp - Local news, unstating the obvious

News outlets they are biased towards the short term, the visual and the scandalous, as has been described by authors like Joris Luyendijk (Het zijn net mensen) and Nick Davies (Flat earth news).
Even more so than national outlets, local news is heavy on human interest and commerce. Much of what can be read is copied unfiltered from press messages and uploaded content. And much of what can be watched is the uncritical registration of society's surface. As such it often fails to notice underlying trends in society or analyze (the absence of) political strategies. It rather excels in stating the obvious.
Our society needs good, independent local press in order to allow for critical citizenship. At Koppelting we invite local writers, photographers, freelance journalists and political analysts to team up and sketch the outlines for an independent crowd sourced news medium.

other: - debate: Smart City, smart or shitty?

Almost all cities are working on it: smart cities. But how is privacy arranged in these cities? Large companies facilitate the infrastructure for smart cities. They do this for free for the municipality, but nothing is for free. What is the price the citizen pays for smart cities? If you agree to the terms of conditions on Facebook, you know your information is used for commercial purposes. But where do you give permission in the smart city? Are companies that build our smart cities allowed to use our information without asking? At Koppelting we will have a debate about the impact smart cities have on our daily life.

hackathon: Luuk Keijser and Katrien van Riet - Designing/Hacking a Board Game

Board games are currently experiencing a revival, which can also be seen in the popularity of the many game shops that sell them. We don't have to turn to shops for games, though. Designing your own game can be just as rewarding, if not more so. The possibilities that a FabLab offers for board game creation and hacking are also endless, especially if we include the opportunity to recycle left-over materials from the FabLab. These elements are the focus of what we want to explore in this two-day hackathon.

other: - p2p justice?

We see a tendency towards a peer-to-peer oriented society. In many areas it is easy to visualise how this could work. Energy production, food distribution, a lot is already being done and experimented with. However, we see some areas where at a first glance it seems more complicated. For instance, how could the justice system work in a peer-to-peer society? Do we even want to go there and why (not)? Also, what projects are already out there? What has already been tried? What are the ethical and practical pros and cons? We are interested in hearing your views on and experience with this topic.

workshop: Nicole Esteje - Citizens' initiatives and the law

In their daily lives more and more people are experiencing the incapability of governments to create and maintain the circumstances in which people can fully participate in society. In many places citizens are taking matters into their own hands: citizen initiatives to create new structures and an atmosphere of solidarity and justice. These initiatives fall into a gap as they do not belong to any of the domains in the Dutch legal system. A special domain is being created, a kind of constitution for citizen initiatives.
Sunday August 27

hackathon: Matthijs Nederveen - The inclusion game

Light for the World has developed a scoring card for organisations to assess the accessibility of their organisations for persons with a disability. The scoring card looks at the building (wheelchair accessibility), communication materials and website (accessibility for visually impaired and people with intellectual disability), HR policy (work opportunities for persons with a disability), attitude of staff, etc.

The scoring card helps organisations to assess barriers in their own organisation and take action to remove or reduce the barriers. However, we have found out that the willingness to take action is very much depending on awareness and attitude of management and staff.

To increase the awareness we would like to develop a game that can be applied within an organisation in a workshop or training session to play with the scoring card, stimulate discussion and improve the awareness around topics of exclusion, how to tackle discrimination and how to promote participation and inclusion of persons with a disability.

It should be fun and educating. We are thinking of a real-life game, rather than a online game. A board game could be an option, but a more active game is preferable.

Light for the World is an non profit organisation and we are mainly working in developing countries, but the game could be applied in Europe as well as other continents.

workshop: Ger Hanssen - Accurate Instruments Do-It-Yourself

It's remarkable to see how accurate instruments for measuring various physical phenomena can be made out of a simple cardboard package. In the webshop ipacity.nl some 80 different examples can be found. For example a spectroscope, a macro lens for a mobile phone or a newton telescope.
I designed comparable, but improved instruments with the same parts, made out of different materials to be cut with the laser cutter.
This workshop wants to show how these instruments were made to invoke more people to be involved into making such instruments.

workshop: Jeroen van Beele - Weconomy experience

What will the new economy look like? do we still use money? what role will the internet play? do we still have to learn and work? you encounter all these questions and many more when you play the weconomy experience.
Our market economy is not a free market, the free market is a utopia, but even if our economy would be a free market, there still would be winners and losers.
This is because there are people that want to win at the cost of others. The weconomy experience is a utopia, just like the free market is, but this utopia is one without the sting in the free market.
Trade is the sting, because trade is what you do when you don’t trust each other. People that trust each other share, like you do at home, at the kitchen table. The new economy is one global kitchen table. The weconomy experience lets you experience what that looks like.

demonstration: Thomas Telkamp - meteorological balloon experiment

On Saturday (during lunch) we will try to launch a meteorological balloon with some sensors, and a radio to send the results live back to us. The current plan is to have an IR sensor looking downward, to see if we can detect a change in the reflected IR light in the atmosphere with increasing altitude. In addition, we add an upward facing UV sensor. Alternative ideas are welcome (but time/resources are limited). Estimated maximum altitude is 35 km. Results available on website.
